Founded in 1972, the first company of dancers had to stop their careers when hostilities began between Serbian and Albanian ethniciites.
After United Nations send in international forces, Kosovo Ballet rose from the ashes with dancers Ahmet Brahimij handpicked from his ballet classes at the University. Almost all 24 Kosovar dancers, aged 20 through 27, have had loved ones who perished during their civil war, and so their dancing has a total commitment and raw power which is unusual for young people. All of them are fiercely intelligent and driven, and have under Ahmet’s leadership the openness and versatitlity to embrace guest choreographers from the US, Europe and beyond, though with their Balkan ballets which center around their core issue of identity and sustainable peace their body and mind are inextricably tied to baring their souls and wearing their hearts on their sleeves.
Though as a phoenix protected literally two buildings away from UN troops on Mother Teresa Boulevard, KOSOVO NATIONAL BALLET performs every week of the year except August, and will be launching its North American tour in 2018.
Company will tour with recorded music, 16 t0 24 dancers, 6 to 8 support personnel, with portable scenery and costumes
2018 — 19 repertory includes their masterwork , VERDI REQUIEM, DASMA (THE WEDDING), WHERE THE LIGHT FALLES, as well as Bolero and Scheharazade. – Touring fees to be negotiated.
